amigurumi
Ever hear of Amigurumi? Me neither, until a few days ago. It's the Japanese art of making tiny crocheted animals and other things. When my kids were little, I used to make little bears for them, but I had no idea I was doing Japanese Art. When I ran across this the other day, something in me was instantly smitten, and I went digging for my crochet hooks. I made the mouse that night, with a pattern I found online. The next morning I made the bear from memory. Pah! Who needs a pattern! Most of the Amigurumi I'm finding online is not felted, but since I'm also currently obsessed with felting, I decided to do that too. Next I want to try needle felting. I'm not sure I'll be able to make myself stab such cute little creatures repeatedly with barbed needles. Then again, I have no trouble drowning them in hot water and scrubbing them until they're fuzzy...

I'm going to start making little animals for the police department, fire department, red cross and other agencies can have something small to give little ones in need. Pocket animals can be very comforting.
I love these. My nine year old daughter and I are learning how to crochet--to add to my huge "when I retire" list.
Oh, I must say, I know how you feel about feeling trapped. We got one day from selling our house and closing on the one we were buying (not our dream house, but I wanted to get out of our neighborhood). Anyways, we found out there were going to be layoffs at my husband work and we (I) freaked out. We decided the house we are living in is paid for and we don't have to worry about mortgage if he does lose his job. It is hard not to feel trapped, but until there is a more seemingly secure economy, we are staying put. I have to remind myself to be greatful for the things I have. It may not be our dream neighborhood, or house, but it is not a tent. It keeps us warm in cold weather and cool during the heat. And most importantly, we have each other--that includes creative on-line company that share our pains.
Good luck. I hope your new home will come at the perfect time and that it is just your size, the one you "see" yourself in even before you see it.
